Welcome
Station 45 - home of Anderson Cleary, the youngest Chief in the history of Cascade. This man gave his all for the station. He brought it back from the brink of closure as a Captain. He remodeled the building, made sure that everything out of date was improved and replaced. However, the station soon came upon turmoil as it was torn in half by the actions of two men. Even after all the close calls he had gone through, nothing could take him away from his beloved station and job. That was until his life was taken in the performance of his duties. It left the station in shock of losing their leader and friend.
As they gave the highly decorated hero his final ride on the truck and laid him to rest, a new threat came to Station 45 and the two others in the city. A pyromaniac was about to make his mark on the city and give this station a new threat to face without their leader. This wasn't their only problem. The actions of two men a few weeks before Anderson's death left the station torn. Five crew members and a Captain was replaced and left a gap in the personnel. Now this burden rests upon the shoulders of a new Chief and old friend to Anderson - Gavin O'Leary.

Duckie knew humor wasn't what Emily would be looking for, but she wasn't sure exactly how to consol her. Had Emily been raped and just found out she was pregnant, well, Duckie could handle that. She had handled it in the past once before when there had been the teen girl who had sliced her wrists open in the bathroom because her pregnancy test had come back positive after she was raped. Even Duckie had gone home and vomitted after that shift. Yes, she knew her friend well enough to know that Emily wanted her family to be a controled conception, well thought out and timed at least enough that she could convince herself she had fully wrapped her head around the idea. Duckie still held loosely to Emily's hand, a reassuring gesture despite her lack of understanding. Maybe, one day she would understand Emily's present situation. Right now, though, she hadn't really formed her own opinion of having a family. She had just kind of assumed it wouldn't happen.
Duckie nodded her head realizing the fears went much deeper and what Emily had said was probably as much as she could articulate at this point. It was a fear Duckie understood. She never wanted others to deal with the kinds of things she had witnessed and she knew Emily had a different, though similar, trauma to deal with every day. "You don't know that your child will. Hell, Emily, you might have an artist on your hands," she said softly with a gentle smile, "and all your kiddo will be doing is taking pictures and making bank." She wasn't going for humor, but she was trying to point out that not all fears came to fruition. So often, people worked themselves into a frenzy out of fears that ended up being for nothing. People afraid of germs and disease did it to themselves everyday, sometimes making themselves more sick whether physically or psychologically. Duckie shook her head, deciding to try and bite at the point.
"I know you have your life pretty well planned, Ems," she murmured. The two were opposites in that respect. Duckie could wind out of control and manage to bring herself back with absolutely no effort because it didn't frighten her to loose control. Her mind didn't go into a panic mode because her future was not so carefully planned out. She lived by the day for the day with the thought in mind that it would be nice to live tomorrow as well. "I'm sure what the doc just told you wasn't what you expected nor wanted to hear. And, maybe this isn't what you want to hear right now, but I'm going to tell you for two reasons. The first being it's the truth. The second being that I really am grasping at straws in the dark here." Duckie smiled lightly. She was taking Emily very seriously. Beyond her work, her friends' fears and problems were things she took extremely seriously. "You're going to figure out a way to make this work despite your plans for the future. If you go through with this-" and she was pretty sure Emily would "-then it's going to throw things into chaos for a little while and your plans are going to change. There's gunna be some aspect of chaos left for the rest of your life. But, you'll handle it. And you'll do it well.
"And, Emily, you're not alone. You've got Sean. You've got me. Every one of the guys at the house will be there. There's no saying where this will end up, but trust this, what's happening right now. Trust that it will all work out for the best. It's gunna be a scary ride no matter what happens or when it happens-- even if it were all perfectly planned. Just hold on tight. We're right there next to you."

Her fear wasn't only that the child would grow up and want to be a firefighter as well, it was also the fact that she would be bringing a child into a firefighting household. Once the kid reached the age of five or six and started asking why mommy was waking up with nightmares or why daddy couldn't sleep, she'd have a hard time explaining away the questions. You couldn't tell a child the truth about those things, and Em knew kids didn't believe all little white lies that were fed to them. Twelve years of firefighting had already taken its toll on her, though she rarely showed its effects. The only person who had witnessed her nightmares was Sean, and she wanted to keep it that way.
"Maybe my fears are unfounded - I dunno", she sighed. Duckie was right - the kid might not be a firefighter, but still the fear lingered, especially of raising a child in a firefighting home. Duckie was right again. Emily did have her life pretty well planned. The only major upheaval lately was meeting Sean, dating Sean, then marrying him. No where in her plans did it say she would get married just after her thirty-second birthday - Hell, no where in her plans did it say she would get married. She hadn't really revised her life-plan since the painful breakup with Josh, so she hadn't even thought about making herself available then. Still, getting married was just a hiccup - having a child was an earthquake destined to bring her life down around her ears.
Emily would be going through with it - to her there was no other option. Sean wanted a family and she had planned on obliging him on her own terms, but this little unplanned bundle would suffice once she got used to the idea. She sighed. These feelings were very foreign to her, and even her friend seemed to have a better grasp on the idea of her having a baby than she did so far. "I can't do chaos, Ducks", she interrupted. Chaos at work was just another part of the job and was something she couldn't control. Her life, on the other hand, was something she was supposed to be able to control, and now she had lost that control, "I hadn't even gotten around to telling Sean that I thought I was ready to start a family", she explained.
She hadn't told him, because she hadn't been one hundred percent certain. Now, whether she was ready or not, it was happening. She knew she wasn't alone, and she was very thankful for that, but she was still scared. Never in a thousand years would she have thought this would happen now. And to think that she had fallen three storeys while pregnant was another shocker for her. She knew that just because her hormone levels were up didn't mean that her injuries wouldn't cause a miscarriage. She rested a hand on her stomach, staring at the bed sheets. "This is all just too much", she mumbled, hardly loud enough for her friend to hear. Being pregnant would force her off of the roof for sure, but still - she didn't know where her career would go now. Sitting on house watch night after night wasn't an idea she wanted to entertain, but she was aware that it was where she was heading.

Duckie smiled. "That's what I'm here for, Emily," she said seriously, though there was an air of play to her tones, "I'll help you get through the chaos until you can figure out a suitable plan. It's my element, Ems. Life's got its twists and turns, and if you like maps, you always take someone along who can navigate without one in case the map gets lost. Seriously, how many times have I come to you for a solid plan?" It had been several, though they had been mostly short term projects that Emily could help Duckie figure out a starting place so it wouldn't be so overwhelming. With the big things, Duckie found it easier to plan lightly and expect a great deal of change. "You'll get through this chaos, even if I have to pull you. Chaos isn't so difficult to navigate once you understand the kind of chaos you're in."
She smiled warmly and gently squeezed Emily's hand. "I think he'll forgive you," she said, "in fact, I think he'll be excited beyond words. I'm sure you will be, too, once you get past this initial confusion." Duckie just watched subtly and silently as Emily's hand fell against her stomach. It was a protective gesture. To Duckie, it indicated that even amongst her fears, Emily was in love with something likely no larger than the nail of her pinkie finger. The paramedic had no problems seeing Emily as a mother. It was a different sort of fire than the ones Emily was accustomed to, but motherhood wasn't too far off. She understood the fear about nightmares. Duckie was a bubbly creature, but she had her fair share of nightmares. Still, other people had done it. People raised children all the time. Whether or not they did well was situational and had more to do with their compassion, patience, and understanding than their professions.
"Hm?" she asked, having heard Emily say something but not caught the words. She could decern their meaning regardless, but she was curious if Emily had intended for Duckie to have heard them or not. If not, Duckie wouldn't press. If she was willing to repeat them, Duckie would respond as best as she could. All she knew for now was that she had Emily's back and wasn't going anywhere unless asked to. But, that was how it had always been.

Emily knew that if there was one thing Duckie was good at, it was picking her way through difficult situations. It was what made her such a competent paramedic. Emily was the same way at work, but for some odd reason, that quality didn't transfer over to her normal life, which was such a shame. At work she was trained to keep her cool - other lives depended on the fact that she wouldn't freak out when the going got tough. Still, when the going got tough outside of the station, she got going. She couldn't help it - it was just her nature. She had always had to lean on someone for guidance when things went sour. When Josh had split with her, she hadn't know what else to do except to hide behind her job to protect herself from that sort of chaos ever again.
"Yeah, yeah", she murmured softly. Duckie had come to her for a starting point more than once because Emily was the one who planned. Duckie winged it quite often, and Em was almost jealous of that. Some days she wished she could just let go and let her life go where it was intended to rather than try to keep it on a preplanned course. "There'll be a lot of pulling, Ducks", she told her friend. Emily wasn't exactly sold on becoming a mother right now, even if the maternal instinct was there.
"Oh, there's no doubt that Sean'll be thrilled", she told the medic. Sean wanted a family and whether or not it was planned wouldn't make a whole lot of a difference to him. He loved children, and she saw that, and she wanted to see his face light up like it had when he had been taking care of Alex. Nothing came close to that look, but it still didn't push away the fears that she had. She wasn't ready for parenthood yet, even if Sean was. Sean had already said that he would get up in the middle of the night, change diapers, and all that jazz, but even that didn't waylay her fears.
Maybe her friend was right. Maybe she would warm up to the idea once she got used to it, but for now she was scared. Until the ultrasound, she wouldn't know if she was still pregnant, and that scared her too. Obviously Duckie hadn't heard what she had last said, which was good. She didn't want her friend thinking that this sudden, unwanted news had her depressed or anything. "Nothing", she said quietly, shaking off the fact that she had said anything. She reached for the glass of water, ignoring the ice chips, and took a small sip. "If Sean shows up before I go for my ultrasound", she started, looking at her friend, "I want no mention of this". Until she knew for certain, she didn't want Sean to know.

Duckie laughed at the image of her pulling Emily by a rope into the great white light that seemed so often to represent clarity or enlightenment. Not that she sought to enlighten anyone, just to help her friend through a difficult time for her to get through. "Oh," she said, "I'm at least as stubborn as you are. The jury's still out on whether or not I'm more stubborn." She folded her arms as if to prove a point befor etaking on a gentle tone. "Besides, I'm willing to pull you through it."
Knowing that nothing wasn't really "nothing," Duckie raised a brow. But, she went along with it and shrugged it off. Emily would tell her when she was ready. It was already painfully obvious that Emily was confused and scared. The future was, in Duckie's opinion, always uncertain. One could take certain precautions, but there were no guarantees. However, to be faced with that reality was sometimes too much to handle in a large dose. And this was a very large dose.
"Of course not, Emily," Duckie said with a nod of her head. She could understand not wanting to tell Sean until she knew for sure that the fall hadn't damaged anything or caused her to miscarry. "You should tell him either way, Emily. I'm not going to step in there." Actually telling Sean if she was pregnant was a small step towards accepting it. Duckie had heard the news from the doctor, so that really didn't count. Telling the father, however, definately counted.
Looking up at the clock, Duckie made a note of how long until the ultra sound. "It's gunna be a while. And, unless you want to think about this and talk it out-- which is fine-- I think I saw some games at the nurses' station. Do you feel up to playing anything? A distraction might be nice." It was a suggestion offered as a friend. She didn't want to keep Emily in this state of overwhelmed confusion more than the woman had to be. Especially considering her injuries and recent trauma.

Sean had been out of town and his cell phone had been left back at his house. He was picking up a few parts for a couple of cars he was working on. He was thankful he had added on to the garage durning the summer. Since he ended up keeping the mustang around for Emily and now he had his hands on a 1970 Dodge Challenger which was his new baby for the moment, he needed more space. Though this trip wasn't mostly about car parts, he was meeting with a landscaper and talking about changing the backyard around. He wanted to fix the old barn up and add a swimming pool to the yard. That is where he spent most of the morning and afternoon was getting those parts, making sure they were the right ones he needed and playing around with ideas for the backyard.
He had more land than what he knew to do with so he also tossed in a guest house. Working and fixing up old cars brought in lots of money. His latest find that he was working on restoring was a old GTO, one of the earliest models so he knew that was going to fetch a great price when he sold it. Sean didn't care about the models but mostly how a car spoke to him. He was good a picking out cars that way. Often times the cars he brought home were labeled as junk and had no hopes of being fixed up. He brought life into cars that had been given up on and it was almost as rewardin as fire fighting.
Sean was wearing a pair of old style tiger strip bdus and a old navy tee shirt with a henley over it. It was a good thing he had gone to the landscaper's first because he was covered in grease, dirt, oil, rust and a few other things from digging around the junk yard. He walked into the house, looking to grab some poweraid before heading back out to the garage to unload his the car. He had just grabbed a bottle from the fridge when he noticed the messages on the machine for the house phone. He walked over and played them but nearly dropped his drink when he heard about Emily being hurt.
He darted out of the house and into his car with the way he pulled out there was bound to be some tire marks in the driveway. It was long before he got ot the house. The Challenger had enjoyed it's self though.. during the open country road he was pushing almost 90 but slowed it down a litlte hwne he reached the city. He was shocked he didn't get pulled over the by police for speeding. He was kicking himself for not taking his cell phone with him. Moments later and after being told where Emily's room was, he walked calm into the room after gathering himself up outside her room.
Sean knew he looked like a bum, he was mess and didn't bother combing his hair this morning or shaving. The dirty clothes didn't help either well he was a little less dirty than he clothes were. A nod of his head was given when he saw Elisabeth. "Hello Duckie, thanks for being here for Emily." He in his normal tone as he walked in a little more. He glanced over at Emily and offered a smile. "Sorry, I wasn't here soon sweetheart. Must be pretty bad if you haven't beaten up the nurses, doctors and going back to the station." He joked. Sean knew how Emily was when it came to being injuried but he was also trying to keep things light. The nurse had told him about her injuries but that was it.

Emily was starting to get tired of the pain. She was thirty one, and felt well over fifty on her good days. Broken bones, pulled muscles, bruises, cuts - they were a regular thing now. The list of injuries she had sustained in her two years of fighting fire in Cascade trumped the combined lists from Detroit, Windsor, and Hamilton. Eleven years worth of injuries didn't come close to what she had already suffered in Cascade. Did she have regrets? Some. Did she still enjoy her job? She was pretty sure she did. Still, she'd met Sean at work, and that was easily the greatest single thing to have happened to her in a long time. Through her numerous ambulance rides she had met Duckie, the sister she wished she'd had.
She heard a noise near the door, and her eyes shot towards the doorway, seeing Sean there. She offered him a tired smile, but she was glad that he had finally shown up. He looked genuinely worried, and she wondered just how many messages had been on his cell phone and the home phone. She knew she looked like hell, considering she felt like hell. Her face was red where she'd gotten flash burns, and there were stitches in her forehead. There was bruising coming out beneath her eyes and along her cheek, and even just breathing was causing her pain, considering she hadn't been wearing her SCBA, and had breathed a lot of smoke and hot air during the flashover.
"It's OK", she told him as he apologized. She wasn't sure where he had been, but Duckie's premise that he'd been in the garage seemed true, considering he was filthy. She nodded when he mentioned that it must be bad, and found her neck sore. "Bad enough to make me think", she explained. She knew that was all she'd have to tell him. A firefighter that actually thought about what they were doing, were firefighters that should hang up the gear. You couldn't think about the dangers without getting yourself, or someone else hurt. She'd have to stop thinking before going back to work.
Glancing at Duckie, she sighed. "Ducks, can you give me and Sean a minute?", she asked, and her friend obliged her. She wasn't going to tell Sean what was going on until after her ultrasound in the afternoon, considering that just because her blood work came back positive, it didn't mean that the trauma she had sustained hadn't done some sort of damage. The ultrasound would tell them more. Em gestured towards the now empty chair, beckoning Sean to take a seat. Reaching to her bed tray, she took her glass of water in hand and took a sip, obviously having some difficulty swallowing. She knew she'd be fine once the swelling in her throat went down, but it was a nuisance now.

Sean had been thankful for the chance to work again after nearly going to jail for murder. Sure Cascade was no Chicago but it was his new home and he made the most of it. He would have given anything to go back to Chicago and work again, he loved that city more than anything. It was where he was born and raised. He missed going to the Steppenwolf Theatre and watching plays there. He missed the deep dish pizzas, it was hard to find a good pizza around here. However here he found something that he had come to love more than any of that, his wife. Sean had wanted to settle down and start a family for a long time but it was hard being a Fire Fighter and having that.
All the injuries he suffered here and facing his fears have been worth it all. His home was starting to become the dream home he had wanted and now he has someone to share that with. Sure his back still acted now and then and there days when getting out of bed were hard but it had been worth it all. Seeing Emily like this was hard but he knew there were times where Emily was standing right where he was. There was just that understanding between them, they knew the dangers and risk they took. He had no need to ask about his injuries even if the nurse hadn't told him about them.
A nod of his head was given when Emily said it was okay. "I was out of the city and left my cell phone at home. I guess when need to super glue that to me so I stop forgetting it." He joked. Sean raised an eyebrow when Emily said it was bad enough to make her think. He knew that if she was doing that than the coat would soon followed. All fire fighters knew that when you started to second guess yourself and the job it was time to give it up because someone was bound to get hurt sooner or later. "Guess that fall has knocked some common sense into you." He joked again, just trying to keep things light. Sean didn't like when things felt tense or were serious.
When Emily asked Duckie to give them a minute, Sean became a little worried after all Emily's friend was like family. Sean brought his hand up and rubbed the side of his face, making his face a little more flithy. He stood there not sure what to say at the point, he wanted Emily to open up on her own. He was doing his best to be less pushy and more understanding. They already had some many hardships and test that he wanted life to be easy for Emily. He just wanted to do right by her and prove her family they were wrong about him. Sean took a seat after Emily beckoned him to so. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his thighs, his hands folded in front of him. "So what's up?" He asked, not sure what was going on.

Sean never had his cell phone with him. He was the exact opposite of her in that respect. The only time she didn't carry it was when she was on a call, but even lounging around the station, it was clipped at her waist. She had always thought of her cellphone as her lifeline, where Sean almost seemed to view it as a nuisance. He didn't really seem to enjoy talking on the phone anyway, so she doubted he would have answered had he been home. Then again, maybe he would have. Who knew? "You should start carrying it with you, that's for sure", she told him. You just never knew when you might need it, and who might need to get in touch with you.
She truly hated thinking the way she was. Her father had been right when he had said that fighting fires was all she knew how to do. Even Duckie saw that. Em knew she couldn't give up the profession - that just wouldn't happen, considering that the friendships forged in the firehouse were ones she couldn't let go. She'd work until she couldn't anymore, then take maternity leave, and see where that got her. Hell, she even figured that she'd be back long before the one year of maternity leave was up, considering that she was able to. Maybe she would switch off the roof, to something a little safer. She couldn't work interior attack, and now she was thinking of switching off ventilation - maybe forcible entry was more her type, or working as an operator. Then she could drive really big trucks.
She sighed. She wasn't sure if it was common sense, or if it was fear. Common sense might have worked in her favor, but fear - fear was something she didn't know how to deal with. "I hope so", she finally said, a small smile playing at her features. Only time could tell if she was actually scared. Already she was wishing to be out of the hospital and back to work, though she wasn't sure in what capacity. 'Maybe', she thought, 'I'll finally take my Lieutenant's exam'. That was always an option. She watched as Sean took a seat. Emily knew that he was uncomfortable in situations like this, and a knot was already forming in her stomach with the growing tension in the room.
How did she go about broaching the subject? After all, nothing was certain until the ultrasound. She was pretty sure Sean would be ecstatic with the news, but if the ultrasound came back with bad news, she didn't know how he would take it. Hell, she was still grappling with the fact that she could be a mother. It was hard for her to hold his gaze, but she forced herself to look at him. "Sean", she started, then paused, drawing a deep breath that made her chest ache and caused her to wince. "The Doctor...", she looked at the sheets on her bed, her hands resting on her stomach, "The Doctor told me I'm pregnant".

Sean hated phones, hated everything to do with them. He would avoid them at all cost and it was hard to ever reach him on one. It was better to find out where he was and show up there instead of trying to call him. The events that led to him leading Chicago caused his great hate of phones, he had lawyers, press among others always trying to get a hold of him on the phone. Now a days he barely got any calls from anyone because everyone knew how much he hated phones but emails and the computer was another story. Getting a hold of Sean was easier that way and cheaper for those who didn't live in Cascade to get a hold of him instead of just showing up.
"Most of the time I don't even think about it. I'm sure if you would remove it from it's usually spot the area around it would be faded." He joked, knowing his cell phone hadn't been laying around in one spot for long enough to cause that. When it came down to Emily and what she could do, Sean kept a open mind. After all the only thing that limited someone was themselves. He believe that if a person put there mind towards something and wanted it bad enough than the would have what it would take to reach that point. There was always a way if there was the will to do it.
He could tell and sense something was up with Emily, she wasn't acting like her normal self and he wasn't sure what was going on. No one really informed him of what happened out there, only let him know that Emily was in the ER. If he knew what happened out there he would have had a better understanding of what was going on. When she had trouble looking at him, he knew something was truly up. Sure asking Duckie to leave was a red flag but this sealed it. His eyes looked up at her when he heard his name. However he wasn't ready to be slapped across the face with what she said next. He sat there stunned by what she said, he couldn't believe what she was saying.
"Are you serious?... How... I'm mean we were safe.. Not that it's a bad thing or anything like that.. That's great news.." He said nearly stumbling over his words but towards the end his face was so bright. He couldn't wait to pass on the good news, he just wished his parents were here with him so he could tell them. "I'm going to be a dad.." He said very quietly, staring at the floor with a huge smile on his face.

It wasn't just the fact that she had just learned that she was pregnant that was making Emily act different than usual. She had memory lapses and couldn't remember what had happened to land her in the hospital, not to mention the fact that the pain medication that they were giving her was starting to wear thin. There were bits and pieces of her memory floating around, but she couldn't piece anything together. She remembered being at the station and sitting down to dinner with the guys, and she remembered the tones going off. She had snatched a piece of garlic toast before leaving the dining hall, and had eaten it on the way to the call. Everything after that was fuzzy, and she couldn't remember the trip to the hospital in the ambulance with Duckie either, despite the fact that she had regained consciousness a few times en route.
Needless to say there were a lot of things bothering her at the moment, though learning that she was pregnant did rank high on the list. She knew how Sean felt about having a family, and the last time she had checked, those feelings were still the same, so she wasn't worried about how he would take the news. Of course he would be happy about it, and the best she could do at this point was be happy for him. He was going to be a father. She was going to be a mother. They were going to be parents. That word scared her a lot more than any fire ever had or ever would. Staring down roaring flames was far easier than staring down parenthood.
She smiled weakly at his response. He was happy - she could tell by the look on his face. She shrugged when he asked how - she certainly didn't know, but she figured that it might have something to do with the fact she had quit taking birth control because she had thought she was ready to have a family. Now that the realization had come full force, she wasn't so sure about her prior decision. She didn't know what more to say. Sighing, she finally looked at him again. "Nothing's certain right now though... I'm scheduled for an ultrasound this afternoon to make sure that nothing bad happened", she explained. She was almost scared of how he would handle the news if her fall had caused her to lose the baby. She didn't even want to think about it.

Sean couldn't get pass the fact that he was going to be a father. This was something he wanted for a long time, sure he used to have a risky job but he had pretty much moved past that job. He was doing what he loved to do, build cars but a part of him still missed the old job. However at this point in his life he knew what was important. There was great house, one of the empty rooms was going to need to be made into a nursey, he already had the one picked out and was making plans already for it. He had the money to make sure Emily and the little one got whatever they needed. He would hire someone who could be around to help them out when they needed it. It was always better to have an extra person around to help ease the pressure. However, he knew that there was a chance that it was too early to start making those plans.
He remembered about the fall Emily just took as he was sitting thinking about things. The look on his face changed sightly before she could even say about anything being certain at the moment. He knew that they could have lost the little one with that fall. He didn't want to think about that. To him his child was already there, life started the moment those cells meant up and started to grow. His daughter or son was just growing and getting stronger but with that fall, that could not be the case. He wanted to be postive about all this, he knew it was better than thinking worse about things. "I understand, just got to keep our chins up until we are sure about everything."
Sean reached out and took Emily's hand. "If it doesn't happen this time around, we can try again when you are ready.. However I just want you to know that, whatever you want to give the little one, go for it. I never want you or the little one to want or need anything. I will get someone to help you out, so you can rest and to help ease the pressure the of having a little one. Just in case I am busy in the garage, around the house or if you just want a nap." He told Emily, hoping ot make her feel better about this all. He just wasn't sure what to say at this point. He was worried about losing something he just learned about having.
When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work. They were not thinking of getting killed when they went where death lurked.

Emily forced herself to smile when Sean took her hand. He was right - they had to remain positive. As it was, she was scared shitless because she had just learned that she was pregnant, and she didn't know what to do. Having Sean beside her, strong and so obviously elated that they were going to have a child was helping to ease her fears, but the nagging question was still there in the back of her mind. Would the kid want to be a firefighter, just like Mommy and Daddy? Even if Sean wasn't active at the station anymore, he was a 'fighter through and through, just like she was. It was in her blood, and she was convinced that it was in his too. The baby would be brought into a firefighting household, and just because it was the right profession for Emily didn't mean she would easily approve of her child doing the same thing.
"Sean, I'm not gonna lie", she started, her voice quiet. It was still painful to talk, even though the swelling in her throat was going down. "I'm scared. Not scared that we'll lose the baby, but scared of having a family. I thought I was ready, and I was going to tell you about it, but...", her voice trailed off and she heaved a sigh, which warranted a grimace. It'd been awhile since she had broken ribs, and she had forgotten just how badly they hurt. "I'm not so sure I'm ready. I know that you're happy - I knew you would be, and I know you're going to be right there with me, but I'm still scared".
It was hard for her to admit that. Sean had never seen her as vulnerable as she was now, considering she had always been strong. When she was hurt, she tried not to let on, and she worked through the pain. However, she couldn't work through this. Her mind had shut down and she didn't know how to function. With any luck, Sean would be able to help her fight through her fears, but it was going to take time, and time was all she was going to have, soon enough. She didn't want to have to leave the Station, and going on Administrative duty during her third trimester was an absolute nightmare. She knew that the day she couldn't do up the clasp on her bunker pants, she'd have a breakdown.
"All I know is the station", she murmured, "I don't know anything about having a baby. I'm a firefighter". She sighed, thinking back to the dinner with her parents before she and Sean had been married. "Dad was right. I don't know how to do anything else but fight fires". She turned her head to face away from Sean and stared at the wall. There were still a few long hours before the ultrasound that would reveal it all, and she was afraid of the silence that could potentially fall between Sean and herself. This was big news - news that she wasn't ready for, no matter how big of a safety net she had. Sean would be there for her, just as Duckie would, and she knew the rest of the guys at the station would help her too, in any capacity they could. But, for all that help, she figured she might as well just be alone, considering how she felt. No one could possibly understand her fears, and because of that, she felt isolated.
