Welcome
Station 45 - home of Anderson Cleary, the youngest Chief in the history of Cascade. This man gave his all for the station. He brought it back from the brink of closure as a Captain. He remodeled the building, made sure that everything out of date was improved and replaced. However, the station soon came upon turmoil as it was torn in half by the actions of two men. Even after all the close calls he had gone through, nothing could take him away from his beloved station and job. That was until his life was taken in the performance of his duties. It left the station in shock of losing their leader and friend.
As they gave the highly decorated hero his final ride on the truck and laid him to rest, a new threat came to Station 45 and the two others in the city. A pyromaniac was about to make his mark on the city and give this station a new threat to face without their leader. This wasn't their only problem. The actions of two men a few weeks before Anderson's death left the station torn. Five crew members and a Captain was replaced and left a gap in the personnel. Now this burden rests upon the shoulders of a new Chief and old friend to Anderson - Gavin O'Leary.

[font=Verdana]Carrie had accumulated some sick days at work, and finally decided to cash in on them. She was tired of coming home at odd hours, only to crawl into bed, rarely ever seeing Xander anymore. He worked shift hours too, and they hadn't caught a lucky break with their shifts in a long time now. No longer would Xander be home when she got back from the hospital, and she was always gone or getting ready to leave when he came home. Couple that with some pretty harrowing days in the emergency room due to a lack of staff, Carrie was ready to curl up into a ball and just disappear from work altogether. Unfortunately she couldn't just give up her job - she still loved it despite the stress she was constantly under. Instead, she settled for taking two weeks off. She didn't have any special plans for her vacation time, but she knew it was going to be nice to spend some time with Xander for a change.
For her first few days off, she cleaned the apartment. It had definitely needed a good cleaning, and she felt better knowing that she had accomplished something you could actually see. Other than that, she had been lounging around in pajamas all day, just killing time until Xander came home. No matter what time he made it through the door, Carrie had a meal ready for him, and relished the time they could spend together now that she was home for awhile. After that time he had been brought into the ER via an ambulance, Carrie truly realized how short their time together could be cut, and had been wanting to spend more time with him.
Then Xander had announced that he had an afternoon off, and had decided to make dinner reservations for them. That was fine by her, considering she hadn't seen the world outside of their apartment since her time off had commenced. Carrie was not a fancy person by any means, but she wasn't against dressing up to go to dinner with Xander. In fact, she was rather excited. It wasn't every day that they got to do something like this together, so that made it extra special.
She had been forced to dig through her closet to try to find a nice dress. Dresses were few and far between. She had the textbook little black dress, and a few that were too formal for this outing, so she was eventually forced to settle for something different. Giving up on finding a nice dress to wear, she pulled out a pair of black slacks and a nice printed v-neck top. Then again, anything looked nice compared to the scrubs she was always wearing. She left her hair down for a change, applied very little makeup, and was then ready to go.

Xander had really been enjoying the time he had been spending with Carrie it had been far too long since they had had any time together and if they had left it along it would have been even longer if they had left it alone. It had been a great past couple days and it just was making Xander appreciate her even more and that’s why he wanted to take the chance to treat her tonight. He actually had the afternoon off and as soon as he had learned his schedule he made reservations for the two of them. It was amazing that Carrie had been making sure there was dinner for them when he got home at night, or whenever he made it home but she deserved a break as well considering it was her actual vacation.
Work went fairly well and was a quiet day so he was ready and able to go home on time, for a change, which just made the day even better. He had actually planned that he wouldn’t be getting off in time so now that he was it just was going to give them a bit of extra time before their reservations, which he wasn’t going to complain about.
Reaching their apartment he walked in the door and called out to her as he closed and locked the door behind himself. Hearing her from their room he smiled and walked through the apartment and stopped in the doorway, “You look amazing,” he smiled and walked up to her and handed her a single rose before kissing her lightly. “I got out on time today,” he whispered to her with a soft chuckle before stepping back from her. “I’m just going to take a quick shower then I’ll be ready to get out of here.”

Carrie heard the door open, and knew it could only be one person, considering that the door was locked at all times, whether she was home or not. One couldn't be too cautious in Cascade, after all. Even with Xander home, the door was locked, whether they were watching TV on the couch or were sleeping. She glanced at the clock on the nightstand and smiled. She'd actually started thinking that Xander might end up late, considering that just because he was scheduled to work until a certain hour didn't always mean that he got off then. If his day had been busy, he'd be late. She was used to that by now, just as her schedule wasn't always set in stone. If a patient came in shortly before she was due to leave and there wasn't another Doctor on call, she'd stay late too.
She was just putting on a pair of earrings when she heard his voice, closer this time. She smiled, color rising in her cheeks as he paid her a compliment. "You're just saying that", she murmured as he crossed the floor to hand her a rose. She took the flower and returned the kiss, smiling as he broke the kiss. Smelling the rose, she nodded at his comment. "I was starting to wonder if you would or not", she admitted. It was a miracle that he had managed to get off on time, considering that when they had plans, things usually happened.
Despite being 'on vacation', Carrie was still considered on call. The staffing shortage was critical in Cascade, so if something major happened in the city and they required all hands on deck, she really didn't mind. It was her job after all, and she had known what the duties would be when she had signed on. However, tonight was for no one else except her and Xander, and her pager was going to be left at home, turned off. "I'll be ready when you are", she told him. It really wasn't hard to see how excited she was to be spending time with Xander, and she wished it could be like that all the time, but they both enjoyed their jobs a lot, and neither would ask the other to quit what they loved.

Shaking his head he smiled “no I’m not, you really are beautiful.” He whispered kissing her again lightly. “I know I’m always amazed when I get out on time, but it was a pretty slow day today.” He told her with a shrug. At least it was slow for Cascade; most other cities would consider a day like Xander’s to have been hellishly busy. “I’ll be out fast and then we can get going, hell we might even be early for our reservations.” He laughed softly before heading into the bathroom. Brushing his teeth before he got in the shower, Xander finished everything up quickly, including shaving, and got out drying himself off and wrapping the towel around his waist. Walking back into the bedroom he found the clothes he was wearing for the night, just a simple pair of black slacks and a nice black button-down dress shirt. That was usually the most “fancy” he would get when the occasion came up that he needed to dress up, but it was a hell of a lot better than either his uniform or a t-shirt and jeans which were his two normal outfits.
Returning to the bathroom he hung the shirt up on the door and ran his hands over his face. He really was excited to be going out which is something he never would have expected from himself before he met Carrie. Before he never really held onto any kind of personal relationship and never would give a damn about going out for any reason, especially a date night like tonight. ‘How things change’ he thought to himself before stepping back from the sink and pulling on his slacks and hanging his towel back up. Taking his shirt off the hanger he pulled it on and started buttoning it as he walked out of the bathroom. Walking into the next room as he buttoned the last button on his shirt, he smiled when Carrie looked over at him and he held out his hand for her. “Ready to get going?” He asked, knowing she had said she was ready when he was but it never hurt to ask again.

She could feel her cheeks turning red as Xander told her that she was beautiful. When she saw herself at work, she was far from being beautiful, especially after a shift. She'd shower before coming home, and still look exhausted and bedraggled. Xander didn't seem to mind though. It was funny how their schedules went. They saw each other fleetingly most often, and one was either rushing through the door for a shift when the other came home, or was sleeping off a shift before having to go back. They were both overworked and always tired when they did get to spend time together, but it never stopped them from making the most of the waking hours they could spend together.
She nodded when he said it had been a slow day. She knew what he meant by a slow day too. A day that was busy for anywhere else was considered slow in Cascade. It was different in the ER though. Slow meant everything was routine, and she didn't have to scrub in for emergency surgeries or treat unusual wounds. She had stories from different things she had seen in the ER while working in Cascade, and not many people believed what she'd been through. For one, she'd been taken hostage by a man in order for him to escape police custody. There were guards outside his door, and she had managed to snag a syringe full of Ativan and sedate him before things had gotten any worse.
She left Xander to go shower, and went to put the rose in a vase. Setting it on the counter, she then went and sat on the couch, flipping through the stations until she came to one playing music. She left it on, and relaxed, waiting for Xander to emerge, ready to leave. It didn't take him long to shower and get ready, and she could hear him in the bedroom, getting dressed. He soon emerged, and she glanced over at him with a smile. She knew that he really wasn't one for dressing up, and in reality, she wasn't either. She'd rather lay around in her pajamas all day if she could get away with it, but she would make a few exceptions. It just so happened that Xander making dinner reservations happened to fall within those guidelines.
Carrie turned the television off and took Xander's hand, nodding at his question. "I'm ready if you are", she told him, standing up and stretching. She had never really thought of herself as lazy before, but now that she had a few days off, she was really catching up on the 'lounging around the house' time. She was getting spoiled, and knew that she would be complaining once she started back at work. Grabbing her little clutch purse from the counter, she slipped her keys into it, then slipped into her black and white peep-toe heels. Grabbing her jacket from the coat hook, she glanced at Xander. Seeing that he was ready, she then opened the door and stepped out - she knew he'd lock it behind him.

Grabbing his jacket from the hook he pulled it on as he followed Carrie out the door. Locking it behind them he walked with her down the stairs and out of the building to his Ford Expedition that was parked outside. Helping Carrie in the SUV, Xander moved around the vehicle and got in the driver’s side. Starting it up, he turned the radio on low as he drove to the restaurant. Parking, Xander helped her from the car and wrapped his arm lightly around her waist as they walked into the restaurant. Giving the hostess his name he stepped back to wait for their table to be ready.

When Carrie had first moved to Cascade, she hadn't expected to end up in a relationship. In fact, she had told herself not to go out looking for someone, because everything in Cascade was uncertain, and she didn't know how long she'd want to work in the city. The turnover rate was high, she had been informed, but she'd made it nearly two years now, and had no regrets. She had never really been the relationship type, in all honesty. But, Xander was different. Maybe it was a subconscious need to have someone to protect her that had driven her to accept him into her life - she didn't know, but in the relationship field, she had no regrets either. It was a shame though, that they both worked odd hours and didn't get to spend a whole lot of time together.
Carrie had learned though, that you had to make the most of the time you did have together. That lesson had been hammered home the time Xander had been ferried into her ER on a stretcher, clinging to life. What a wake-up call that had been. So, every little thing that they got to do together, even watching a movie, was significant. It was why she was so happy to be going out to dinner with him. Time spent together was never wasted between them. Heading downstairs to Xander's SUV, Carrie climbed in and buckled her seatbelt. She still didn't own her own vehicle, and relied on Xander to take her to work and pick her up whenever his shift allowed for it. Her money went towards paying bills, and the rest of it was banked.
Sometimes silence was golden, and Carrie relaxed as they headed to the restaurant with just the noise of the radio playing. Once at the restaurant, she waited patiently with Xander to be seated, though the wait wasn't long. As they were shown to their table, Carrie couldn't help but look around at the occupied tables. The restaurant was fairly busy, and she knew for a fact that it would only get busier, considering it was one of few fine dining establishments in the city. Truth be known, Carrie would have been just as content to have dinner at home with Xander at a decent hour for a change, but this was a change in scenery as well as a change of pace, so she definitely wasn't complaining.
Menus were handed to them, as well as a wine list once they were seated. She scanned over the menu, finding that a lot of the things listed sounded good, though the seafood dishes weren't really doing it for her. She had never grown out of her childhood dislike of seafood, though she could tolerate some fish now. Still, lobster, clams, scallops - all were considered disgusting in her books. "What do you think you're gonna have?", she asked, setting her menu down and picking up the wine list. If they were both thinking along the same lines food-wise, she knew getting a bottle of wine would be cheaper, but she also knew their tastes differed greatly.
'Knowing Xander', she thought, 'He'll want steak or something, and get red wine'. She didn't care much for red wine. Every time she had a glass, she would end up with a headache, so she tended to stick to white wines; a nice Chardonnay would go good with the Fettuccine Alfredo she was thinking of having. A waiter arrived at their tableside, asking if they were ready to order or if they would like something to drink first. "I'll have water to start", Carrie spoke up, looking at Xander. If he was ready to order, so was she.
